KERENS–The Malakoff Lady Tigers basketball team traveled to Kerens Nov. 19, losing to their longtime rivals by 38 points.

As of Nov. 19, Malakoff was 2-4 for the 2018-19 season, which includes a third-place finish at the Slocum Tournament. There, the Lady Tigers netted a win over Normangee and secured a 54-29 victory over Troup, the latter of which was played Nov. 16.

Against Kerens, Shakera Thompson led Malakoff with 12 points, followed by Kyiah Hicks with nine points, Alliyah Coleman and Mia Jackson with six points apiece, Kiayla Jackson with two points and Keikei Walker with one point.

Coleman and Thompson combined early to give Malakoff a 4-3 lead. After Kerens nailed a three-pointer, Kiayla Jackson banked a layup off the glass to tie the game at six points each. Hicks scored a bucket under the basket to cut the Kerens lead to 10-6, then after two Kerens free throws, Mia Jackson nailed a three-pointer as the first-period buzzer sounded to get Malakoff within 12-11.

Kerens soon built a 22-15 second-period lead. After a Malakoff timeout, Hicks scored for the Lady Tigers on a turnaround jumper with 4:20 before halftime, which allowed Malakoff to creep closer to Kerens at 22-17. After that, a Kerens run gave the Lady ‘Cats a 39-17 halftime advantage.

Second-half highlights for Malakoff included a Hicks three-point play with 3:20 left in the third period, soon followed by a Thompson bucket in the lane. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to return to action at the Eustace Tournament, which will be played Nov. 29-Dec. 1, followed by a Dec. 4 game at Teague.
