Malakoff downs Pottsboro, take on Jefferson in Area round

MESQUITE–The Malakoff Tigers claimed the Bi-district championship with a big win over the Pottsboro Cardinals Nov. 16 at E.H. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite.

Caleb Adams opened the scoring for the Tigers on defense as he returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown to give Malakoff a 7-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

Three minutes later, Keevie Rose added a two-yard rushing touchdown for the Tigers as they took a 14-0 lead after a successful extra point from Hector Romero.

In the final minute of the first quarter, both offenses kick into gear.

The Cardinals finally got on the board on a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-7.

The Tigers answered in the final seconds of the first quarter as Darion Peace completed a 39-yard pass to Andreas Garrett for a touchdown to take a 21-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

Rose added his second touchdown of the game with eight minutes left in the first half on a 12-yard rush to push the Tigers lead to 28-7.

The Cardinals answered one minute later on a long 70-yard pass to cut the Malakoff lead in half 28-14.

Peace connected with Garrett once again on a 39-yard pass with fi ve minutes remaining in the first half to make it a 34-14 Tigers lead.

The Cardinals added one final touchdown in the final two minutes as the Tigers led 35-21 heading into halftime.

Rose added his third score on a one-yard rushing touchdown just two minutes into the third quarter to push the Tigers lead to 42-21.

Pottsboro added another 24-yard touchdown with three minutes remaining to cut the lead to 42-28.

The Peace-Garrett connection was at it again as Garrett caught a 70-yard pass for his third touchdown to make it a 49-28 game.

The Cardinals completed a 46-yard pass in the final minute of the third quarter to cut Malakoff’s lead to 49-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

Peace completed a 33-yard pass for a touchdown to Parker Busch in the first two minutes in the fourth quarter to give Malakoff a 56-35 lead.

Dedric Davis added a final one-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute as the Tigers sealed their Bi-district championship with a 63-35 victory over the Cardinals.

The win moves to the Tigers to 8-2 overall in 2018 as they advance to the Area round.

Malakoff will face the Jefferson Bulldogs (11-0) Nov. 23 at Meredith Memorial Stadium in Mineola.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Black Friday.
