Malakoff tops Kemp in regular season fi nale

KEMP–The Kemp Lady Yellowjackets fell to the Malakoff Lady Tigers on Senior night Feb. 5 at home in their regular season finale.

Sha’Kera Thompson deposited the first basket of the night to put the Lady Tigers ahead 2-0 in the first quarter.

Taylor Carr answered immediately for the Lady ’Jackets with a basket of her down to tie the game 2-2.

Mia Jackson added a layup and two free throws to put Malakoff back in front 6-2.

Kemp senior Alicia Dennis added two from the line to cut the defi - cit to 6-4 for the Lady ’Jackets.

Kiayla Jackson added a few steals and layups in the first quarter as the Lady Tigers ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 14-6 lead heading into the second quarter.

Thompson picked up another layup to start the second quarter to put the Lady Tigers ahead 16-6.

Dennis added another free throw for the Lady ’Jackets to make it a 16-7 game.

Thompson and Dennis then traded free throws to make it 20-8.

Kiayla Jackson picked up the and-1 late in the second quarter to push the Lady Tigers’ lead to 24-9.

Natalie Quezada added a late free throw for the Lady ’Jackets and Jackson one last shot for the Lady Tigers as Malakoff led 27-11 at halftime.

Kyiah Hicks began the second half with an offensive rebound and a layup for the Lady Tigers to push their lead to 29-11.

Dennis knocked down two more free throws for the Lady ’Jackets to trim the deficit to 29-13.

Thompson put in two free throws for the Lady Tigers as Malakoff took a 41-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Julianna Warren put in a layup for her first points of the night for Kemp to begin the fourth quarter as Kemp trailed 42-15.

Malakoff sophomores Denver Starkes and Kelsea Boles added back-to-back shots for the Lady Tigers to put them up 50-16 late.

Carr added two free throws for the Lady ’Jackets right before Jackson picked up the and-1 for the Lady Tigers as Kemp was tripped up in their regular season finale 55-20.

Dennis, in her final game as a Lady ’Jacket, racked up eight points against the Lady Tigers.

Carr finished with fi ve points for Kemp while Warren added three points against Malakoff .

During the post game, Dennis and Jaylynn Hefti were honored by their teammates, parents and fans as the lone two seniors on the Lady ’Jackets squad as they played their final game.
